130 Tibetan students have received admission at the prestigious University of Delhi for the academic year of 2013, whose admission started on June 5 and is expected to close by the end of July.
"The university administration has been very considerate to Tibetan students wanting to get admission. Tibetans were placed under the foreign student reserved quota, although Tibetans don't qualify for it. Foreign students require valid passport and visa to be considered for it. Also, one should clear TOEFL or IELTS to prove proficiency in English which we don't have that too. University registration fee of Rs.18000 and college registration fee of US$100 is also exempted for Tibetan students," says Dhondup, a member of the Student Union of TCV Youth Hostel who helps students graduating from Tibetan Children’s Village School in India seek admission at Delhi Universities.
For the Tibetans students to be considered for foreign quota, the students have to apply through the Bureau of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Children Village’s Youth Hostel located in Delhi, India. From the 130 student that got admitted into the University of Delhi, 50 applicants were assisted through the Bureau Office and 79 applicants through the Youth Hostel. “Out of the 97 applicants 79 got admission and out of which 44 were admitted in the best colleges of the university," says Tsering Dolma, the administrator of the Youth Hostel.
Tibetan students were offered admission in 20 different courses including English, Commerce, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology except Economics. Economics is considerred the most sought after course of the University, making admission into the Economics program extremely competitive.
