The recent wave of Tibetan self-immolation protests mark a dramatic escalation in the tactics opposing Beijing’s rule. Since 2009, more than 35 Tibetans - mostly young monks and nuns - have set themselves on fire in protests against China.

The Chinese government has described the self-immolations as terrorists acts and accused overseas groups and the Dalai Lama of inciting separatism. But the exiled Tibetan administration has blamed China's repressive policies and crackdown of peaceful protesters for the spate of self-immolations from Tibetan areas.
