Indian President Honors Tibetan School Teachers with National Award


Two teachers of the Central School for Tibetans (CST) received the 2009 National Award from the Indian President Pratibha Patil for their outstanding contribution in the field of education.

The award was presented to Chime Youngdoung, primary teacher of Mahendragarh Branch of CST, Chandragiri, Orissa and Mr. Brij Mohan Aggarwal, post graduate teacher (Commerce) of CST Mussoorie, Uttarakhand at a function held in Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on Teachers Day on Sunday.

Chimme Youngdoung from Phunstokling Settlement told VOA Tibetan Service that he feels fortunate to have the opportunity to serve the Tibetan students for the past thirty six years. As a former student of a Tibetan school in exile, Youngdoung said he owes his gratitude to the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, the Indian Government and the Tibetan Exile Administration. "I feel happy to gain recognition for my hard work and effort" said Youngdoung.

The National Award to Teachers was instituted in 1958 in memory of former President and eminent educationalist Dr. S Radhakrishnan. The award carries prize money of Rs. 25, 000, a certificate and a silver medal to 374 teachers from across the country.
