Dalai Lama to Offer Prayers in Quake-Hit Japan


Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama is scheduled to hold a public prayer in Tokyo Friday to pray for the victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, said Lhakpa Tsokho, the Dalai Lama representative for Japan.

The Dalai Lama altered his schedule to be in Japan for the 49th days since the disaster as the 49th day marks an the last day of mourning for the dead according to Buddhist tradition and is recognized as an important buddhist day before the dead head into their next stage of existence on the 50thday, said Tsokha.

The Dalai Lama left Dharamsla for the United States Wednesday. He is scheduled to hold a series of public talks in California, Minnesotta, Arizona and New York.
