China Slams US Human Rights Record

Beijing is accusing the United States of spying on its own citizens, discriminating against women and ethnic minorities, and allowing gun crime to run out of control.

The accusations were made Sunday in Beijing's annual response to Washington's criticism of China's human rights record.

China's official Xinhua news agency issued a lengthy report Sunday from the State Council Beijing's Cabinet saying political donations to election campaigns in the U.S. have damaged the country's democracy, and that religious discrimination is on the rise. China's report also accuses U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan of infringing on human rights.

The report was a retort to the U.S. State Department's yearly survey of human rights around the world. Washington's report Friday said repression and coercion in China are routine, with the government consistantly intimidating political activists.

Human rights have been a source of tension between the two countries for decades.
