China Releases 2 Pro-Tibet Activists from Custody - 2004-09-01

Police in China have released two foreign pro-Tibet activists detained after they unveiled a banner calling for a boycott of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in the Chinese capital. A Tibetan rights group says the activists, one from Australia and one from the United States, were released several hours after their arrest. The group says the two are expected to be flown out of mainland China Tuesday.

The activists unveiled the banner Monday at a local theme park showcasing Tibetan and other Chinese ethnic minority groups.

Pro-Tibet activists have come to China this week to announce plans for a four-year campaign urging Beijing to improve its human rights record before the 2008 Olympics. Among other demands, they want more autonomy for Tibet.
