India, China hold Border Talks - 2004-07-26

India and China are holding talks in New Delhi on a border dispute that has been at the heart of distrust between the giant neighbors for more than four decades. India's National Security Adviser J.N. Dixit and Chinese Executive Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo are leading the talks on demarcating the 3,500 kilometer border.

Reports from New Delhi say they have agreed in principle to settle, but it will take several more rounds of talks.

The two sides signaled a shift last year during a visit to China by former Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, when New Delhi acknowledged for the first time in writing that Tibet was part of China.

India disputes Chinese rule over Aksai Chin, 38,000 square kilometers of barren, icy and uninhabited land on the Tibetan plateau. And China claims 90,000 square kilometers of territory in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.
