Dalai Lama's Envoys Return From Beijing Talks - 2003-06-10

A four-member delegation from the Tibetan government-in-exile led by Mr. Lodi Gyari Gyaltsen, special envoy of the Dalai Lama, has arrived in New Delhi Monday night from China after holding reconciliation talks with officials in Beijing.

Dalai Lama’s Representative in New Delhi Kasur Tashi Wangdi told Tibetan stringer Tsering Wangyal that the delegation will meet with the Dalai Lama on wednesday morning and after the meeting might hold a news conference in the afternoon. The Dalai Lama is returning from a European tour. Last week in Copenhagen, the Dalai Lama said he was encouraged by what he called China's more positive attitude on the Tibetan issue.

Beijing's official line has always been to accuse the Dalai Lama of wanting independence for his homeland. But the Tibetan spiritual leader has repeatedly said he is not pushing for independence, but rather for special autonomy within China.

Thus far the delegation has not spoken to any media and even the whereabouts of the delegation is a secret. The delegation visited Shanghai, Beijing and Dechen Prefecture in Kham. These recent talks between the Dalai Lama's envoys and officials in Beijing were the second in recent months.
