Dalai Lama Says China Will “Sooner or Later” Give Autonomy to Tibet - 2003-01-26

Dalai Lama said at a news conference thursday at Sarnnath, India, that international pressure and rapid changes within China would eventually force Beijing to grant autonomy to Tibet. “Autonomy to Tibet under the Chinese constitution has to come sooner or later,” the Tibetan leader told reporters. The Dalai Lam cited increased Chinese Chinese interest in Tibet’s religion, culture and tradition as an example of progress. He said, however, that Chinese settlements in Tibet have harmed the religion and changed the population ratio of most big cities so that Chinese outnumber Tibetans. The Dalai Lama said that he would hand over the administrative powers to an elected government when Tibetan is granted autonomy with a certain degree of freedom
