The speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, met Monday with Chinese officials in Shanghai.
She also toured the city, which is China's financial hub.
Pelosi is in China with a delegation of U.S. lawmakers to engage in talks on energy and climate change between the world's two largest emitters of greenhouse gases.
Pelosi met Sunday with Catholic Bishop Jin Luxian, who was imprisoned for 27 years. Pelosi said in a statement she was honored to meet with Jin and hear his thoughts on religious freedom in China.
Pelosi has not publicly criticized China's human rights record so far during the visit, which comes a week ahead of the 20th anniversary of China's deadly crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators.
The congresswoman was a vocal critic of the June 3-4, 1989 crackdown on protests in Beijing's Tiananmen square, and other areas. During a trip to China in 1991, Pelosi unfurled a banner in the square that commemorated the hundreds and possibly thousands who died in the crackdown.
The Democratic Party lawmaker from California is also a prominent critic of China's policies in Tibet. Last year as Chinese authorities clamped down on a wave of Tibetan protests, Pelosi met with Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, at his headquarters in northern India and condemned China's actions.
On June 1-2, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will meet with senior Chinese officials for talks to strengthen U.S.-China economic ties.
