Chinese state media say an on-duty soldier was shot dead and had his
machine gun stolen during an attack in a central city in China that
triggered a security alert.
The official Xinhua news agency said the 18-year-old soldier was
standing guard at a military garrison Thursday night in Chongqing when
he was shot by attackers who then made off with his gun.
The report provided few details, and said it was unclear just how many
attackers were involved. It also said police and the military are
jointly investigating the case.
Local residents told Xinhua that they noticed police carrying out
checks on suspicious vehicles and passengers in the city early Friday
morning.
