U.S. Calls on China to Reconsider Its Tibet Policies བོད་སྐད།

The U.S. urged China to reconsider its policies in Tibet, saying they have created tensions and had a “harmful impact” on religion and culture in the region.

In a statement marking the 50th anniversary of a Tibetan uprising yesterday, the State Department and White House both voiced concern about situation in Tibet, called on China to open up a substantive dialogue with the Dalai Lama's representatives and said it is “deeply concerned by the human rights situation in Tibetan areas.”

U.S. officials said that while the United States recognizes Tibet is a part of China, they urged China to reconsider its policies in the remote region that have harmed Tibetan religion, culture and livelihoods.

U.S. lawmakers are also scheduled to vote this week on a nonbinding resolution that calls for a multilateral effort to bring about a peaceful solution to the Tibet issue.
