Rights Group Calls for Parole of Chinese Muslims at Guantanamo བོད་སྐད།

A rights group has called on U.S. officials to release on parole a group of Chinese Muslims held at the Guantanamo Bay detention center.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch called Monday for the release of 17 ethnic Uighurs (pronounced WEE-gurs) captured in Pakistan in 2001.

A federal judge in Washington is scheduled to hear the detainees' case Tuesday. They are requesting parole inside the United States.

The rights group says the government approved their release in 2004, but that they were not deported to China because of fears they would be tortured there.

U.S. authorities ruled in June this year that the detainees are no longer enemy combatants, but they said they have the right to hold them at Guantanamo if no other country will take them.
