China’s Patriotic Refuge བརྙན་འཕྲིན།

Recently there has been an unprecedented show of force by Chinese citizens, both at home and abroad, as they protest against Western media’s allegedly biased coverage on Tibet, and to show their support for the Beijing games. As a result, the torch relays in Canberra, Tokyo and Seoul have gotten incrementally more violent as the large numbers of Chinese protesters clashed with the pro-Tibet and other anti China protesters. Some have questioned Beijing’s strategy of using unbridled nationalism in order to lash back at the world’s reaction to the protests in Tibet, rather than working to resolve the root causes for the Tibetan protests. In the short term, it appears that Beijing’s plan is serving their political purposes domestically and helping the CCP consolidate their hold on power.

Kunleng invites Tenzin Thosam from the University of Virginia, to discuss this post Tiannamen generation of Chinese students and the implications of rampant Chinese nationalism for the Tibetan struggle. Mr. Thosam grew up and was educated in Qinghai and is also an authority on Buddhism.
