Whereabouts of Detained Tibetan Singer Unknown as Protests Enter Sixth Week བོད་སྐད།

Chinese authorities have detained a popular Tibetan television announcer and singer in the northwestern city of Xining.

Family members of Jamyang Kyi have received no news of her fate for weeks. Her husband Lamao Jia, who is also a reporter, said police detained her on April first in Xining, capital of Qinghai province.

Observers say Jamyang Kyi, who is also well-known for blogging on women's issues, has avoided sensitive themes and language in her music. There has been no official confirmation of her detention.

Foreign media Friday confirmed details of a demonstration south of Xining involving monks from Rong Gonchen monastery in Rebkong Chinese: Tongren County. Tibetan exile sources Thursday reported that more than 100 Buddhist monks and other Tibetans were arrested after staging a peaceful demonstration.

An India-based Tibetan exile rights group the Tibetan Center for Human Rights and Democracy reported Friday that the 80-year-old former head of the monastery Alak Khasutsang sustained head injury during the police crackdown and is in critical condition.
