Tibetans Clash With Police in Amdo Rebkong, Tibet བོད་སྐད།

A confrontation between Tibetan festival-goers and police has sparked riots in China's northwestern province of Qinghai.

Sources in the town of Rebkong told VOA police took 200 Tibetans into custody after a clash with police on Thursday during a major religious festival. Authorities later released all but 10 and imposed a curfew in the area.

Authorities Friday released eight more of the detainees, but local sources say the Tibetans had been badly beaten by police. One Tibetan has reportedly been hospitalized in critical condition.

The exact cause of the initial confrontation is unknown, but Thursday's detentions prompted protests the following day. Sources say an angry crowd overturned police vehicles and injured security personnel.

One source told VOA that the crowd began chanting "Long live the Dalai Lama" and only dispersed after a local religious figure appealed for calm.

Chinese state media have not carried any news of the incidents.

Local sources say 20-thousand Tibetans had gathered for this year's "Great Prayer" Monlam Chenmo festival held at Rebkong's Buddhist monastery. It was scheduled to conclude Friday.

Rebkong is in Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, part of the northeastern Tibetan region Tibetans refer to as Amdo.
