China Disapproves of Canadian PM Meeting with Dalai Lama

China has expressed strong disapproval of a meeting between Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao Tuesday said the meeting grossly interfered with China's internal affairs and seriously undermined Chinese-Canadian relations.

The meeting took place in Mr. Harper's office in Ottawa on Monday. China had previously warned Canada that the talks could hurt relations between the two nations.

Beijing made similar threats earlier this month when U.S. President George Bush and leaders of Congress honored the Dalai Lama in Washington with the highest U.S. civilian medal.

Beijing has consistently challenged the Dalai Lama's attempts to meet with world leaders, accusing him of secretly promoting independence for Tibet. The Dalai Lama denies the charges, saying he only wants autonomy for the region.
