Pakistan Army Kills Insurgents in Tribal Region

Pakistan's army says it has killed up to 30 insurgents in a battle in a tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

Military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad said the fighting erupted in South Waziristan overnight when militants attacked an army checkpoint. He said helicopter gunships backed the Pakistani forces. At least two soldiers also were killed in the clashes.

On Wednesday, Pakistani troops backed by helicopters pounded militant hideouts in North Waziristan. About 40 militants were killed in the fighting.

Also Wednesday, in the northwest, Pakistani authorities said pro-Taleban militants attacked a paramilitary post and abducted 12 security personnel near the town of Bannu in North West Frontier Province.

Pakistani authorities are still trying to negotiate the release of more than 200 other soldiers who were seized by militants last month in the region.

Taleban and al-Qaida militants have taken refuge in Pakistan's remote tribal regions since the United States removed the Taleban government in neighboring Afghanistan in 2001.
