China Opposes Taiwan's Latest UN Bid

China's Foreign Ministry says it is firmly opposed to Taiwan's latest bid to join the United Nations, reiterating its stance that the island is part of China's territory.

The ministry said Thursday that any attempt by Taiwan to join the U.N. will not win support from the vast majority of U.N. member states.

The ministry issued the statement after Taiwan launched another bid to secure a U.N. seat after its last effort was rejected last month.

Taiwan, officially known as the "Republic of China," lost its U.N. seat to China in 1971. Every bid that Taiwan has made to join the U.N., starting in 1993, has been rejected.

China has kept Taiwan out of most world bodies that require statehood as a condition for membership, including the World Health Organization.
