Montenegro to Formally Declare Independence from Serbia

Montenegro is poised to formally proclaim its independence Saturday, bringing to an end its long alliance with neighboring Serbia.

The official proclamation by the Montenegrin government follows the May 21st referendum in the republic that called on Podgorica to break ties with Belgrade.

Serbia and Montenegro were partners in the last remaining union of the former Yugoslav federation that disintegrated during the Balkan wars of the 1990s.

Serbian Prime Minster Vojislav Kostunica, a strong opponent of Montenegro's independence, is rejecting an offer by the European Union to help ease friction with Montenegro in order to facilitate what some EU officials have called a "velvet divorce."
