More Than 180,000 Maoist Supporters Rally in Nepal

More than 180-thousand Maoists and their supporters, chanting slogans and waving hammer and sickle red flags, have staged a rally in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu.

The rally was held in an open-air theater less than a kilometer from the royal palace. The demonstration was intended to pressure political parties to hold speedy elections for a constituent assembly that will determine Nepal's future.

Chief rebel negotiator and Maoist spokesman Krishna Bahadur Mahara told reporters the rally would be peaceful and that no weapons had been carried to the capital.

Maoists have held rallies outside the capital to win support since Nepal's new multi-party government matched a ceasefire declared by the rebels.

King Gyanendra gave up absolute power and reinstated parliament in April after weeks of violent street protests.
