Senate Passes Bill Awarding Congressional Gold Medal to the Dalai Lama

The United States Senate passed the Dalai Lama Congressional Gold Medal Act (S 2784) without amendment by unanimous consent on May 25, 2006. This Act is to award a congressional gold medal to the Dalai Lama of Tibet in recognition of his many enduring and outstanding contributions to peace, non-violence, human rights, and religious understanding. The bill had broad bipartisan support, with 73 cosponsors from both sides of the aisle.

Under the rules, Congressional Gold Medals require the support of at least two-thirds of the Members of both the Senate and House of Representatives before they can be signed into law by the President.
