China Says Falun Gong Aims to Sabotage U.S.-China Relations

China's latest condemnation of the Falun Gong spiritual group says the organization is trying to sabotage relations between China and the United States.

During Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to Washington last Thursday, a Falun Gong activist heckled Mr. Hu at the White House. She was charged Friday with intimidating and threatening a foreign official.

China's foreign ministry said Tuesday that the incident demonstrates Falun Gong is not only an "evil cult", but also an anti-China political organization. The ministry urged Washington to take effective measures to stop the outlawed group from carrying out anti-China activities.

Falun Gong originated in China as a spiritual movement, but was banned in 1999.

Falun Gong practitioners say many of their peers have been beaten, tortured or sent to forced labor camps. Beijing denies it mistreats Falun Gong members.
