Talk to VOA: Panchen Lama

The previous Panchen Lama was one of the most intriguing figures in modern Tibetan history. While he continued to work with the Chinese government, his persistence in speaking out on behalf of Tibetan interests within the Chinese state made him a highly revered leader, second only to the Dalai Lama. This week’s Tibetan TV call-in show discusses the Panchen Lama’s historical legacy and the controversy over his reincarnation. Joining us to discuss this issue on the phone from San Francisco is Arjia Rinpoche, formerly a top-ranking religious figure within China’s official Buddhist elite and a close long term associate of the ninth Panchen Lama. Joining us in the studio is Mr. Rinpo who is about to begin his second annual long distance bicycling trip to draw attention to the plight of the missing Panchen Lama, Gendun Choekyi Nyima
