Condoleezza  Rice Urges China to Open Dialogue With Dalai Lama

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has urged China to open up a dialogue with the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet.

Ms. Rice called on Beijing to embrace religious freedom during her recent trip to China. She expressed her hope for "improved relations" between China and the Catholic Church and between China and the Dalai Lama's representatives, so that Tibetans can freely pursue their cultural interests.

The United States says China's leaders should not view religious freedom as a threat, but as a "force for good, for stability and for compassion."
