Renowned Tibetan film-maker Pema Tseden’s film, ‘Tharlo’ opened at the Museum of Modern Art on Thursday. The film is adapted from a novel written by the filmmaker himself and is about the lead character, Tharlo’s transition from a traditional life style as an independent shepherd to that of becoming part of the State system. In the film, Tharlo goes to a town in Qinghai province where he seeks to apply for an identification card, which becomes for him the beginning of a profound change of lifestyle – one that requires navigation of complicated laws and regulations. The film depicts Tharlo’s quest for his personal identity and rights.
