Samdup, a Tibetan monk from Ngoshul Monastery, and who survived after his self-immolation attempt on Nov. 7, 2012 was released after serving a three year prison term. The 16 year old had attempted to carry out a triple self-immolation along with Dorjee 15, and Dorjee Kyab 16, to protest China's repressive policies towards Tibetans.

Another Tibetan monk, Khedup Gyatso was released on March 23 after serving his prison term, but years of torture in prison has left him in poor health.

Since 2009, over 143 inside Tibetans inside Tibet have set themselves on fire to protest China's repressive policies towards Tibetans, and to demand freedom for Tibetans and the return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet.
