Hundreds of Tibetans gathered at Tsuk-lag-khang temple, Dharamsala, India on July 24, 2013 to pay respect and pray for Konchok Sonam who self-immolated a few days earlier on July 20. The prayer organized by the Central Tibetan Administration’s Department of Religion and Culture was presided over by Kirti Rinpoche, the head of Kirti Monastery.

At the gathering, Lobsang Sangay, head of the Tibetan Administration in exile, paid respect to the family members of the deceased and urged everyone to pray for him and his family. Sangay spoke about his recent visit to the Buddhist pilgrimage area of Bodh Gaya after the serial bomb blast and urged all Tibetans to remain cautious and alert of possible attack to the Buddhist Monasteries in Himachal Pradesh, as issued by the National Investigation Agency of India. He further urged the Tibetans to be friendly and cordial with the local Indians keeping in mind the importance of religious harmony.

Konchok Sonam becomes the 120th known self-immolator in Tibet since 2009 and the 22nd in 2013.
