VOA (Voice of America) operates one of the world's largest international news media networks on TV, radio and digital properties with a total weekly audience of more than 200 million people in countries including Africa, The Middle East, Asia and beyond. VOA produces more than 2,100 radio and tv broadcast hours of content a week and this application showcases the best of those programs. To do this, VOA employs more than 1,100 full time staff and thousands of journalists around the world, focused on countries without a free or established press or free and open internet access.
The VOA Mobile Streamer features:
These Java-based applications are built for very low-end or “feature” phones, especially the old Nokia phone that still have a stronghold in our African, Middle East and Asian markets. The apps are build using technology from BiNu, a popular caching and proxy service, that deliver content faster to very low tech and low bandwidth communities who often don’t have phones equipped with modern or fast-performing web browsers.
For example, Wikipedia is 10x faster on the Binu platform than their Wikipedia-optimized mobile website. The VOA feature phone app content is limited to text and photos but in these markets and with limited bandwidth that’s a great place to start.
