Friends and relatives of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei say the internationally renowned artist's wife has been permitted to visit him for the first time since he was arrested six weeks ago.
The relatives said Monday that Ai is in good health, is receiving his medications and does not appear to have been mistreated in police custody.
A lawyer who is close to the artist told VOA that police took Ai's wife, Lu Qing, to see him at an undisclosed location Sunday. The lawyer said the meeting lasted about 15 minutes and the two did not discuss the reasons for Ai's detention.
Authorities have said Ai is being investigated for unspecified economic crimes, but human rights groups suspect the arrest was part of a broader crackdown on dissidents. Ai, whose work is featured at leading international galleries, has been an outspoken critic of government policies.
