Samye Monastery: Much More Than Tibet’s First Monastery

Far from being simply Tibet’s first monastery, Samye served as the political, cultural and spiritual center of Tibet during the reign of Emperor Trisong Detsen, but then lost its central role after the collapse of the Tibetan empire in the 9th century.
