After completing his studies in the Bon tradition in 1955, Samten Karmay attended Drepung monastery for further studies until 1959 when he went into exile to India. One of the first Tibetans to study in the West, Karmay earned his PhD degree at the SOAS, University of London where he did his thesis on The Great Perfection (rDzogs chen). Moving to France in 1980, he joined the National Centre for Scientific Research where he was later awarded
