Tibetan Lake Expected to Flood Indian Villages - 2004-08-18

Thousands of people from the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh have evacuated the area as a remote Tibetan lake threatens to flood across the border. Authorities in China Tuesday said chances remain high that the lake will overflow its banks and flood downstream villages in India. Chinese experts are attempting to drain the lake safely.

The temporary lake was formed last month by a landslide on the Pareechu River in the Himalayas, and is rising by up to eight centimeters a day.

India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal are experiencing one of their worst annual monsoons in years, with severe floods claiming more than two thousand lives and displacing tens of millions of people.
