Chinese President Hu Jintao visit Xinjiang བོད་སྐད།

Chinese President Hu Jintao visited Xinjiang this week and urged local government officials and security forces to focus on maintaining stability, saying that this is critical in the development of Xinjiang.

China’s Central TV aired a 22-minute long report about Hu’s visit and his speech. This is his first trip to the region after last month’s riots that left 197 people dead and more than 1600 people injured.

Hu praised party officials and security force’s effort in dealing with the riots and said that the Communist Government will enhance its measures to develop Xinjiang and make its residents rich.

Analysts believe the visit means local authorities have gain control of the situation and conclusions of the review process about the riots have been made at the communist party’s highest level.

Earlier report by Chinese official China Daily said the trials of the suspects in the riots would begin this week, but it was soon denied by Xinjiang government’s officials.

Exiled Xinjiang leader Rebia Kadeer and Uighur American Association said in statements that the contradictory reports indicated the lack of transparency in China’s judicial process and a cause of concern, because Chinese government is the only source of information on the trials, and that also means the trials would not be open or fair.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and AP.
