Bhutan's Prime Minister Lyonchen Jigme Yoser Thinley called on Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, chief of main ruling Congress party, in New Delhion Wednesday.
Thinley, who is on a four-day visit to India, met Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee earlier in the day. Thinley's visit comes barely two weeks after the visit of Indian Foreign minister Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna to Bhutan. Thinley had paid a state visit to India in July 2008 as the first democratically elected Prime Minister after Bhutan's historic transition to a democratic constitutional monarchy. He, thereafter, visited India in November 2008 to participate in the 2nd BIMSTEC Summit in New Delhi. India and Bhutan have agreed to develop 11,000 MW of hydel power through ten projects by 2020.
India and Bhutan share a historic friendship and India has been the for providing assistance towards Bhutan's development. India, Bhutan's largest donor, has funded all of the tiny Himalayan nation's major projects, including the airport at Paro, the Bhutan broadcasting station, the Bhutan-India microwave link, and all exploration, survey and mapping of mineral resources.
