Human Rights Watch Urges China to Extend Media Freedoms བོད་སྐད།

Human Rights Watch is urging China to indefinitely extend the media freedoms granted to foreign journalists for the Olympic games.

The New York-based rights group says the Chinese government should also extend the freedoms to Chinese journalists.

The relaxed reporting regulations are to expire Friday.

China granted foreign journalists greater reporting freedom in January 2007, as part of the government's pledge to improve its human rights record before and during the Olympics.

The loosened regulations removed controls that normally require foreign journalists to get government approval for all interviews and travel.

Foreign journalists and international human rights groups said China did not fully implement the new rules. Police continued to detain and harass foreign journalists during the games in August.
