Indian Police Arrest Suspect in New Delhi Bomb Blasts as More Explosions Occur བོད་སྐད།

Police in India say they have arrested a key suspect in a series of deadly bomb attacks across the country.

Officials say Mohammed Arif was detained Monday in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state.

Arif is believed to be a member of the Islamist militant group Indian Mujahideen, which has claimed responsibility for the September 13th bombings in New Delhi that killed 22 people.

Also Monday, at least five people were killed and many more injured in two separate bomb attacks in western India, in towns where tensions are high between Hindus and Muslims.

Four people were reported killed following an explosion in the town of Malegaon in Maharashtra state. Reports said rioting broke out afterward and several policemen were injured.

Another bomb blast occurred in a market in the town of Modasa, in the state of Gujarat. Officials said one person was killed and several others injured.

Separately, Indian police have detained two people in connection with a bomb attack in a New Delhi market that killed three people on Saturday.

Detectives say the suspects were detained (late Saturday) after authorities traced a call made to police on Friday, warning them of an attack. No one has claimed responsibility.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, and Reuters.
