Dalai Lama Hoping for Talks with China to Resume བོད་སྐད།

The Dalai Lama says he hopes talks between his representatives and Chinese officials over the volatile situation in Tibet will resume next month.

The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader spoke to reporters Thursday in Sydney, Australia, where he is holding meetings with that country's officials.

The Dalai Lama's envoys met with Chinese authorities in early May to discuss the anti-government demonstrations in Tibet. Further talks were postponed due to the deadly May 12th earthquake in southwestern China.

Beijing has accused the Dalai Lama and his followers of encouraging the protests as part of an effort to separate Tibet from China. He denies those accusations, and expressed his support for China's hopes for stability. But he says stability must come "from the heart, not the gun."

The spiritual leader says he is not seeking Tibetan independence from China, but is calling for "meaningful autonomy" for the Himalayan region.

The government crackdown in Tibet sparked angry demonstrations worldwide over the relay of the Beijing Olympic torch.

But the Dalai Lama is calling on his supporters not to disrupt the upcoming Beijing Olympic Games and the torch run in Tibet.
