Chinese Newspaper Accuses Western Countries of Complicating Tibet Issue

China's main English-language newspaper has accused some Western countries of complicating the issue of Tibet.

The article published in Monday's official "China Daily" accuses the United States and the European Union of hypocrisy and ignorance. It criticizes resolutions passed by the U.S. Congress and the European Parliament calling on China to halt repression in Tibet.

The "China Daily" article repeats allegations that U.S. government-funded Tibetan exile groups have orchestrated rioting and protests in China. Beijing also has accused the Dalai Lama of masterminding several weeks of protests in Tibetan areas of China.

Chinese authorities have arrested more than two thousand Tibetans (including more than 500 monks) in connection with the sometimes violent protests in northwestern China since March, but most of them have been released.

Tibet's government-in-exile says more than 150 people have died in the Chinese crackdown on mostly monk-led protests. China blames Tibetan rioters for the deaths of at least 20 people.
