China Warns Italy over Dalai Lama Visit

China has issued a warning over the Dalai Lama's visit to Italy.

When asked about the visit during a press conference Thursday, a Foreign Ministry spokesman asked "relevant countries" not to provide a venue for what he called the Dalai Lama's separatist activists.

Spokesman Qin Gang said the Tibetan exile's visits were not merely a personal or religious issue.

The Dalai Lama arrived in Milan on Wednesday and is scheduled to meet with lawmakers next week in Rome.

China has already complained to Italy about the visit and strongly protested last month after media reports said the Tibetan spiritual leader would meet with the Pope.

The Vatican later said there was no papal audience scheduled. But it is not clear if Pope Benedict will meet with the Dalai Lama privately as he did last year.

Beijing protests meetings between foreign leaders and the Dalai Lama, whom China accuse of seeking political independence for Tibet. But the exiled spiritual leader says he is only seeking autonomy.
