China Says Merkel's Meeting with Dalai Lama Damaged Ties

China says relations with Germany have been damaged by German Chancellor Angela Merkel's meeting with Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

The Chinese government said Tuesday the German leader made a serious mistake in meeting with the Dalai Lama and called on Germany to repair the damage. China said the meeting interfered with its internal affairs.

Merkel ignored warnings from China and met with the Dalai Lama in Berlin on Sunday. She said she supported the Dalai Lama's push for more autonomy in his Tibetan homeland.

After Sunday's meeting, China canceled scheduled talks with top German officials that were supposed to take place in Munich on Sunday.
