Police Arrest Tibetan Protestor as China's Vice Foreign Minister Visits South India

A Tibetan shopkeeper in Ooty, south India closed their shops and held a demonstration near Ooty's famous Botanical Garden when China's Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo made a short stop there.

Tsering Samten tells VOA that several Tibetan protestors were held and detained by the police. Tibetan Refugees Welfare Association President, Paljor had said that the police had refused permission to them to hold a black flag demonstration against the Chinese delegation's visit. The Police not only refused the Tibetans permission, they ordered the Tibetans to confine themselves to their homes on the day of the Chinese Representative's visit to the city.

Later, the special representatives of India and China - M.K. Narayanan and Dai Bingguo continued their second day talks in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu on the contentious border issue between the two nations. Indian Ambassador to China Nirupama Rao and her Chinese counterpart in India, Sun Yuxi were among the 19 delegates who assisted the special representatives in their talks. The delegation held its first day talks in New Delhi Friday. Sources say Indian premier Manmohan Singh plans to visit China this year.

This is the 10th round of talks between the sides since the countries appointed special representatives in 2003 to speed up a resolution to the border disput
