Bush Meets With Opposition Legislative Leaders

President Bush has met with leaders of the opposition Democratic Party to establish a working relationship with new legislative leaders following elections that will put Democrats in control of Congress.

Mr. Bush and Vice President Cheney met Friday at the White House with Democratic Senator Harry Reid, who is expected to become the new Senate majority leader when Congress convenes in January.

Mr. Bush said Democratic control of the legislative branch of government is an opportunity to demonstrate to the American people that Democrats and Republicans can work together - and that the two parties are equally patriotic.

Reid said he and the president agreed the only way to make progress would be through cooperation between the two political parties.

On Thursday, the president met with Democratic Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, who is likely to become the Speaker of the House.

During campaign speeches, Mr. Bush said terrorists would be the winners if Democrats were elected.

The Democratic party gained control of both houses of Congress this week for the first time in 12 years.
