Car Bomb Attack Kills 66 In Eastern Baghdad

Iraqi police say a car bomb has exploded in eastern Baghdad, killing at least 66 people and wounding about 100 others.

Authorities say the blast occurred early Saturday in a crowded market in the Shi'ite district of Sadr City.

Separately, Iraqi officials say gunmen kidnapped a Sunni female member of parliament and seven of her bodyguards today in Baghdad. A spokesman for the parliament speaker's office says the victim is Taiseer al-Mashhadani, a member of the Iraqi Accordance Front, the largest parliamentary bloc of the Sunni minority community.

No other details were immediately available.

The Iraqi government has imposed a security clampdown on the capital for the past three weeks.

Meanwhile, the U.S. military said Friday it is investigating at least three soldiers accused of raping a woman and killing her and three family members.

Authorities said the Iraqis were killed in March at their home in Mahmoudiya, south of Baghdad.

The investigation is the latest in a series of probes of U.S. troops suspected of killing civilians in Iraq.
