Indian Troops Kill Five Infiltrators in Kashmir

India's military says it has killed five suspected Islamic militants in Kashmir who were trying to enter Indian-controlled territory from Pakistan.

An Indian army spokesman says troops intercepted and killed the five men Tuesday morning in the northern Maschil district of Kashmir. The spokesman says the intruders were attempting to cross the Line of Control, which divides the Indian and Pakistani sectors of Kashmir.

Militants typically try to cross the Kashmir border during the summer, when snow melts on mountain passes, allowing easier movement of fighters and weapons.

India accuses Pakistan of arming and funding the militants in their fight against Indian rule in Kashmir. Pakistan denies the accusation. Both countries claim sovereignty over all of Kashmir.
