Haniya Vows to Bring Gaza Gunmen Under Control

Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniya has vowed to get gunmen off the streets after clashes between Palestinian factions left three dead Friday.

Mr. Haniya called the situation in Gaza dangerous. He says his security forces will try to control what he called civilian gunmen Friday's clashes erupted after Abu Yousef Abu Quka, head of the militant Popular Resistance Committees, was killed when his car blew up outside a mosque.

On Friday, the United States barred all dealings with officials of the new Palestinian government controlled by Hamas. The new rule goes beyond a previous ban on contact with Hamas officials to include officials of Palestinian government ministries, regardless of their affiliation.

But a State Department spokesman says American diplomats can still deal with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and officials under his control.
