Bird Flu Claims Third Victim in Eastern Turkey

Health officials in Turkey say a third child of the same family has died of bird flu in the eastern Turkish city of Van.

Doctors say an 11-year-old girl, Hulya Kocyigit, died Friday. Her 14-year-old brother died of the disease Sunday, and her 15-year-old sister died Thursday. Officials at the World Health Organization said Thursday preliminary tests indicate the first two siblings died of the H5N1 strain.

Health officials say some 25 people in Turkey - mostly children - are being treated for possible bird flu. Doctors say some of them had played with the severed heads of infected chickens.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's welfare minister said his government has budgeted $940 million to fight bird flu over the next two years. He says the funds will be used, in part, for village surveillance for signs of the virus in both poultry and humans.
