The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) in its 2013 Annual Report said that "religious freedom in Tibetan areas are worse now than at any time over the past decade."
According to the report released Tuesday, religious restrictions have led to deep resentments among Tibetans.
“Since 2008 protests in Tibetan areas, the government’s control of the doctrines, worship sites, and selection of religious leaders of Tibetan Buddhism, and its arrests and detentions of individuals who oppose government policy or support the Dalai Lama, have nurtured deep resentments among Tibetans,” said the report.
USCIRF documented the increasing self-immolation protests by Tibetans against the Chinese government and imprisonment of hundreds of monks, nuns and religious leaders including the 11th Panchen Lama.
In the report, the USCIRF suggested the U.S. government should put China on the list of "countries of particular concern."
