Conference votes to start conferring ‘Geshe’ degrees to Tibetan nuns

Representatives from different nunneries in India and Nepal, along with representatives from the CTA Department of Religion and Culture and the Tibetan Nuns Project, unanimously agreed to start giving Geshema degree to nuns who have pass the equivalent to PhD degree in the West.

The delegations at the this special conference adopted rules and regulations on the conferment of what is being termed the ‘Geshema’ Degree, and designated the Department of Religion and Culture of the Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamsala as being in charge of coordinating the conferment of Geshe Degree to nuns.

Kalon Pema Chiinjor, Department of Religion and Culture said, “It is a historic change that the conference made this decision and all participants should be proud of.”

Kasur Rinchen Khando, Director of the Tibetans Nuns Project, thanked all the concerned people who have made the nuns’ dream of obtaining a Geshe Degree a reality and urged the nuns to “study hard.”
