Dharamsala Celebrates 51st Democracy Day

  • Tibetans in Dharamsala observed the 51st Democracy Day on Friday.

The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Prem Kumar Dhumal, was the chief guest at official function organized at the Tsuglakhang Temple.

The newly elected Tibetan Prime Minister Lobsang Sangay and speaker of the Tibetan Parliament Penpa Tsering addressed the gathering.

The Tibetans in exile have been celebrating the democracy day since September 2, 1960, the day when the first representative body, the Commission of Tibetan People’s Deputies was instituted.

The Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama after his arrival into exile in India called for democratization of Tibetan administration and promulgated a constitution for a future Tibet, based on the principles of modern democracy.

On August 8, 2011, Tibetan exiles inaugurated a new prime minister. Lobsang Sangay, a Harvard educated legal scholar, became the first democratically elected leader to take office since Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, retreated from political duties.
